Mmmmm, Candy!
Halloween and fall in general bring a cooling off of the weather and a feeling of needing to be cozy. For many this means eating comfort foods and Halloween means we will have mass amounts of candy on hand just waiting to be eaten as well.
This time of year is wrought with temptation. While its ok to enjoy things in moderation it’s so easy to get carried away with the spirit of things and even easier if you have children egging you on.
Sugar is one of the most inflammatory foods you can eat
When we have a craving for sweets, we reach for something like candy, pies, cakes, candy bars and cookies. These choices are all high in both sugar and fat.
Alternative Ideas: Instead of reaching into that Halloween pumpkin for junk food, we would suggest choosing a piece of fruit instead.
Fruit is sweet, easy to eat, travels well, and the natural sugars do not have the inflammatory properties that refined sugar does. Leave the trick or treating to the youngsters.
Dark chocolate 70% or above, is a good substitute as well but only in moderation.
Greek yogurt is another great option, as it is high in protein and generally low in fat and sugar. Candies that are sweetened with honey, maple syrup, rice syrup, or other natural alternatives are also ok in moderation.
TIP: If you are craving sugar – try going for a walk or working out. It may sound strange but physical activity quells sugar cravings.
NOTE: If you constantly crave sugar you may have a systemic candida infection. The office of Kaster Chiropractic can test you for this and get you on a good cleanse to rid yourself of it for good.
Excess sugar can wreak havoc on your body. Aches and pains can result from the added inflammation and if too much sugar is consumed ongoing, you may end up with diabetic issues as well. So this Halloween choose a couple pieces you really want and then leave the rest for healthier choices.
