Spinal stenosis is an abnormal narrowing of the canal inside of the spinal column. This narrowing results in pressure on the nerve roots and or spinal cord itself. This means the electrical signals from your nervous system cannot properly relay back and forth between the brain and the intended nerves. It can present as weakness of the legs or arms, tingling, pain, or numbness. Bending forward lessens symptoms and gives some relief while leaning back can make it feel worse.
While some may be born with a narrowed spinal canal, usually it develops over time as the spine ages.
So far there is no cure for Spinal Stenosis but there are treatments that can help ease symptoms. Many patients can help ease pain and inflammation with use of over the counter NSAID treatments such as ibuprofen or naproxen, natural alternatives such as bromelain or turmeric, and if these do not do the trick, your physician may recommend stronger choices or even a cortisone shot in the affected area.
While medications may help to cover the pain and allow you to do your normal daily activities, chiropractic can help alleviate pain by way of manual manipulations which are painless and can help your body lower inflammation response and heal itself giving you a more pain free life. If the pain and disability become too severe surgery may be suggested.
Before resorting to surgery please do consider chiropractic. Treatments include spinal manipulation and flexion distraction manipulation as well as daily exercises to build up the structural integrity of the body to better support the spine keeping it in place leading to less internal friction and resulting inflammatory response.
Left untreated spinal stenosis can result in permanent nerve damage. It may affect your balance, gate, dexterity, grip, strength, and even bowel functions. If damage is too severe it may cause paralysis and even result in death.
A diagnosis of spinal stenosis is one you should take seriously and make sure that you follow up on treatment plans laid out by your medical doctor and your Chiropractic doctor as well.
