The work climate in America today is focused on time cards, hours, and getting the job done. We have been conditioned to feel bad about calling in sick even if we are indeed not feeling well.
While it is vital to have a good work ethic, it is important to remember that you are important too. More important, in fact, than your job. There are millions of Americans living daily with pain. Of those millions, only a small portion is on or qualify for disability. Without disability, you need an income of some kind to support yourself. So, of course, you have to go to work.
What do you do though, when you have to work and you are in pain?
If your condition requires extra breaks you should talk to Human Resources. That way it is documented and doesn’t come across as if you are being lazy. If it doesn’t, then there is nothing that says you need to disclose a health condition to your employer.
Bring whatever comforts and soothes you into work with you. Medications, tea, coffee, ice packs, heat packs, extra cushion for your office chair. Stand and stretch, take breaks and walk, bring a sleeping back and take a nap on lunch if there is space or even the back seat of your car can work.
See if you can wear earbuds and listen to music or positive affirmations (depending on if your job will allow this and it isn’t distracting).
If you are having a particularly bad day and really just cannot function – do call in as long as it isn’t on a regular basis. Your employer should have some allotted sick days and vacation days and be willing to work with you and cut you some slack, after all, good employees are hard to find and you cannot do your best work when you can’t think straight.
Find out if your injury or illness qualifies as a disability.
The Americans with Disabilities Act does not provide a list of specific disabilities. Instead, the law states that those “qualified individuals with disabilities” may not be discriminated against by employers. Their rules states that ”qualified individuals with disabilities” are employees who can perform the essential functions of the position.
