Does your job require you to sit for hours on end?
We live in a stationary work world. No matter if you are working in an office or from home most jobs these days require a lot of computer work. That means sitting still for most of the workday.
Sitting at your desk, in the car, in a meeting, at lunch – It adds up to as much as 40 or more hours per week. It is too much for our bodies. Being this sedentary can cause back issues, neck problems, tight arms, wrists, carpal tunnel syndrome, tight muscles that are weak, and poor posture.
If you do work on a computer, there isn’t a lot you can do to change that. There are some ways though that you can alter your daily routine by taking some steps to ease up on your body.
Positive Small Changes
- Take a walk for lunch or on break
- Take the stairs rather than the elevator
- Stand and stretch
- Walk around while talking on the phone to clients
- Get an adjustable height desk
- Sit up straight and pay attention to your posture
Awareness
Are you at a desk right now? Check your posture. How are you sitting? Is your spine straight or are you hunched over?
Good posture
Sit back in your chair making sure that your back is well-supported by the chair. Distribute your body weight evenly on both hips keeping both feet on the floor, legs uncrossed.
Make sure your desk, keyboard, mouse, and screen are all at a comfortable level.
Take breaks!
We are not designed for extended sitting sessions. Taking breaks is important for our spines and for our eyesight. You will be surprised how much better you feel within just a few days of doing this.
Use alarms on your phone to remind you to move regularly throughout the day.
Get Moving!
Exercise is good for your health. It is recommended that we do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic, physical activity throughout the week.
Unplug
Once you get off of work, put down your phone for a while. Stop staring at a screen and look around you and really live. It’s great for your psychological health, your eyes, and your neck and back.
Get Adjusted Regularly
Regular chiropractic visits are important to maintain spinal health. Proper alignment keeps your entire body functioning at top performance.
