When most people workout they do the bigger body parts – leg day, back, shoulders, arms, and core. Most of us never even consider working out things like ankles, wrists, forearms, or neck.
Because of this, over time as we age, these parts of our bodies can become weak. Weakness can lead to injury.
If you are experiencing ankle pain chiropractic may be able to help in conjunction with some simple at home (or in gym) physical therapy exercises. Chiropractic adjustments done on a consistent basis facilitate blood flow speeding up healing and reducing the chances of it happening in the first place.
Chiropractors can assess you physically by having you lay back on the adjustment table with your knees bent. Once assessed adjustments to the ankle and foot can be made appropriately. Flexibility and movement are tested through the ankle and down into the mid foot and even into the to flexation area. Often times ankle pain is due to lack of movement in the foot itself. There are 26 bones in the foot alone. That leaves a lot that can end up locked up and rigid. Rigidity leads to issues. Full movement is needed in order for your walking or running gate to be proper.
The foot will be tested for over pronation or over supination. (if your foot is moving too much). Accordingly, the adjustment technique involves a gentle squeeze of the center of the foot, a shake to loosen it up, and a quick pulling to move everything back into place. It is then reassessed to make sure the adjustment worked.
This is done by utilizing joint play. Moving the connective joints up and down to see how much range they now have. There should be the ability to move so that when you walk your body gives like shock absorbers on a car.
Once your ankles and feet have been adjusted chances are you will feel quite a bit better. In order to support the adjustment and help prevent future ankle injury here are some very easy exercises you can do at home with just a flat sheet rubber exercise band.
