The application of ice and heat are time tested soothing healing methods. When to use which one often times can get muddled. We wanted to clarify the question so that, should you become injured you are easily on the road to recovery in the best way possible.
HEAT Therapy: Though ice is the automatic go-to for many sometimes heat is the better choice. Heat is intended for stiffness or muscle pain.
Heat therapy improves circulation to the area. An increase in temperature brings extra fluid to the tissue helping to improve flexibility. Heat should never be used on an open wound nor on bruised or swollen skin. Additionally, if you have conditions such as a DVT, MS, diabetes, vascular disease, or even dermatitis, steer clear of heat presses as the risk of burns is greatly raised.
ICE THERAPY: Cold is best for new injury sites and joint issues. Ice helps to reduce inflammation and swelling. It decreases blood flow to the area, reducing histamine reactions, inflammatory response, and as a result, takes down swelling.
Cold packs should be placed 15-20 minutes at a time and followed by a rewarming of about 45 minutes before icing again. Always use a thin protective layer between your skin and the ice itself. Direct cold that sits for too long can cause tissue damage so limit sessions to 20 minutes.
ALTERNATING COLD AND HOT:
There are cases where using both and alternating can be more powerful and useful than hot or cold therapy alone. These two cases are in those who have osteoarthritis and in rehabilitation exercise. In both cases using heat to warm up the muscles and joints before movement helps with fluidity and range and icing afterward can help limit swelling, soreness, and pain.
