When it comes to disc herniation and the accompanying pain, a new study has been conducted comparing the efficacy of epidural injections with chiropractic manual manipulation treatments.
Back pain plagues nearly 65 million Americans.
8% (16 million) report varying levels of chronic back pain. Back pain is the sixth most costly health condition as ranked in the United States as of 2020. It is estimated that 80% of Americans will experience back pain in their lifetime and 50 billion dollars annually is what is spent to try to get relief every year. Back pain issues become more common as we age. The best ways to avoid back pain are to work out and do exercises on a regular basis that strengthen the back, abs, obliques, and core as a whole. The stronger your core the more protected your spine and the less prone to injury you become.
Epidural steroid injections are frequently used to help with pain levels in patients with disc herniations as well as other conditions that cause lower back pain. Injections do have the potential for adverse effects on the body such as headache and muscle weakening. They are also only a temporary solution.
Chiropractic was the clear winner
In this study, 102 patients were studied. The results came back that 62.7% of those receiving epidural injections reported feeling “Better” or “Much Better”. 76.5% reported the same level of feeling “better” with only chiropractic intervention which is zero risk and noninvasive. When rating pain, 53% of the epidural patients reported less pain while 60% of chiropractic patients claimed the same.
Additionally, chiropractic patients reported 23% lower medical costs when compared to injections. You do not have to be saddled with the costs or risks of epidural injections if you suffer from back pain.
